T 13: Female Characters

I really can get into a character if he/she is well written whether on screen, written word, or stage. This week I am listing female characters I truly dig from the screen (movie and tv).
13 Female Characters (in no particular order)

  1. Donna Reed (Ok no bashing here): I loved the idea of her homemaking skills and the fact that she was dressed every day. How many times do you read that homemakers need to get out of their sweats and get dressed today? Donna knew it long ago...

  2. Marmee and Jo March: I have to group these ladies together because, well because I want to. Marmee's devotion to helping others and raising women of character is so dear to me. Jo is what we now would call a tomboy and as she ages a women's libber. Yet, she finds what she truly loves is being home. Before I get asked, my favorite versions are the 1933, 1949, and 1994 versions, however if I had to pick my favorite Jo I prefer Kate to June and Wynona.

  3. Marion Cunningham: Who can resist Mrs. C? She was a ditz, and I can so relate to that. She was a good mom, wife, homemaker, and boy when she knew she was in the right, look out!

  4. Peg Bundy: Give it up to the trashiest, worst homemaker, worst mom ever to grace TV. But ya know what, we all have a little Peg inside. Do you know how many days I wish I didn't have to do anything but shop and fluff my hair and wear cheap skin tight animal print clothing? Ok, maybe not the fluffing hair part, but do nothing and still have my house looking neat and orderly (I never understood how that happened). Ah, Peg was a great character, however raunchy and inappropriate she was.

  5. Holly Golightly: If you are a Breakfast at Tiffany's lover, you know what I am talking about here. Who can resist Audrey Hepburn's portrayal of girl just trying to get a guy? Now, if by chance you haven't seen this flick...it is a MUST!

  6. Mary Bailey: There is just something about a girl who falls in love with the average Joe, even though some hotsy totsy guy wants her for his wife. She could have lived a life in the lap of luxury, but instead she chose a man of character and raised a family. Any woman who can turn a leak old abandoned house into a honeymoon sweet complete with a rotisserie made from an old phonograph tells me it IS a wonderful life.

  7. Charlotte A. Cavatica: I know she isn't human, but I admire her ability to see the good in everything, beauty in all places, and say everything in a most edifying language. A difficult thing to admit, she gives of herself in a way I never could.

  8. Olivia Walton: WoW! How she could live with her mother in law (who is a control freak), I will never know. Raising her children, cooking, gardening, making ends meet, painting, having time to be supportive of everyone, getting up at 4 am; all this and there is never one thing out of place in her home. 7 kids and I never once saw one toy! All kidding aside, I love her kindness and her efforts to get the facts first, and react later.

  9. Lucille Ball: I Love Lucy is one of the best TV shows EVER! Lucy lives in apartment, she whines, she is influenced by the world, and everything she and her cohort, Ethel, touch is pure laughter! Can you say Veta Vita Vegamins? Despite all her antics and craziness, Desi loved her still.

  10. Elaine Benes: This girl is quirky, arrogant, and absolutely plain. But Julia plays her as no other actress could have! Who else could pull of the Urban Sombrero? Could you recover from mistakenly sending out Christmas cards with an inappropriate photo of yourself? You gotta admit, this character is so well written and portrayed.

  11. The Girl: This is the character portrayed by the one and only Marilyn Monroe in the movie that gave us the most remembered photo of Marily. While she is a knockout, The Girl is also cute, innocent, naive, and well meaning. Not my favorite Marilyn movie, I love the character.

  12. Samantha Stevens: We all know her as the wonderful wife who wanted to give up witchcraft to be a normal human wife, homemaker and mother, but any chick who can wiggle her nose and accomplish her tasks is one I want to watch. Elizabeth Montgomery, well she just had the perfect nose for the job.

  13. Kim McAfee: This is a teenage girl at her best. She is grown up and child like all at the same time. She desperately tries to keep her feet on the ground about her new found fame, but alas alack, who could not succumb to Conrad Birdie? I have seen and been in this production quite a few times, yet I have to admit no one plays Kim like Ann-Margaret.

That's it for me this week. Leave your name so I can see your T13~

I loved the Donna Reed show (which I must have seen in reruns, because surely I'm not that old :)

As for Samantha, I wanted so desperately to BE her when I 'growed up', but without Darren. Even my 7 yr old self made him for a dork.

What about Mrs. Ingalls?

I actually really love Peg Bundy. While she wasn't the best mom in the world, she loved her family. Even Al. :)

I'm with Christine. Peg loved her family and it showed. Like you said, there's a bit of Peg in all of us - how much remains to be seen - and we'd be fortunate to love (and be loved by) our families as openly as Peg does.

I agree with you completely on Hepburn's Jo. She's the ultimate. I saw the Broadway stage version recently and the actress in the lead was lovely and could sing and dance and run and do swordplay, but she just wasn't Kate.

This is a very fun list!
Peg Bundy! I never want to wear animal print - my mother always did when she was manic - likely that is my aversion!
Hee hee -

How creative!

I love your list. You know, I have never seen Breakfast at Tiffanys. I'll have to put it on my list. Perhaps while I'm here at my mom's I'll have someone to watch it with me.
